Role of Gravity in Competition with Tunable Body Forces on Czochralski

Experimental results are presented of the oscillatory convection of mercury melts cou- pled with crucible rotation under an imposed cusp-shaped magnetic field in a Czochralski crystal growing configuration. Regular baroclinic thermal waves are observed at rather low thermal Ross by number, Ro_t 1, i.e. at reduced gravity. These regular waves give way to irregular waves as Ro_t increases. The amplitude of temperature fluctuation under- neath a fixed non-rotating disk as a model crystal increases significantly after the tran- sition form the regular to irregular wave. It is shown that irregular thermal waves induced by the crucible rotation can be transformed into regular waves by the action of cusp magnetic field. Consequently, temperature fluctuations underneath the fixed dish are significantly suppressed.
