Defense officials have beensounding alarms about whatthey describe as a glaring national security vulnerability — anew class of ultrafast weapons being developed by China and Russia that wouldoverpower U.S. missile defenses.Detecting and tracking hypersonicmissiles is a tough problem the Pentagonis trying tofigure out how to tackle. Anetwork of ground radars, satellites andinterceptors defends the United States andallies from ballistic missiles from countries such as North Korea. But the systemwould be ineffective against non-ballisticweapons like hypersonic vehicles that flyat several times the speed of sound andmaneuverinunpredictabledirections.
