Ultra high-resolution imaging is becoming ubiquitous and of significant commercial value - the U.S. government has invested $2 billion in the commercial remote sensing industry over the last five years. Web portals such as Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth have made an enormous number of people aware of the quality of satellite imagery. To illustrate the importance of services using such imagery, we see some major investments such as NavTeq's takeover by Nokia for $8 billion and TeleAtlas' $3.8 billion takeover by TomTom to support their location-based services.
