European Earth scientists have selected three finalists to compete to become the European Space Agency's (ESA) seventh Earth Explorer mission. Among the missions proposed for the 2015 launch opportunity is a satellite requiring a very large radar antenna in a pioneering bandwidth.rnFollowing a series of presentations supporting six candidates, the three selected missions will now move into one-year Phase A studies. Two competing industrial teams for each mission will be awarded the Phase A studies, each valued at around 2.5 million euros ($3.2 million).rnThe relatively expensive study phase was decided as a way to fully examine the missions' technical and schedule risks. The winner will move toward full construction. ESA has budgeted about 300 million euros for the entire program, including construction and launch of the satellite and several years of in-orbit operations.
