Using a newly improved image-processing technique, scientists have uncovered an exoplanet hidden in archived Hubble Space Telescope data taken 11 years ago, according to an April 1 Space Telescope Science Institute press release.rnThe new technique has the potential to help researchers uncover other distant planets potentially lurking in over a decades worth of Hubble archival imagery.rnImages of a planet seven times the sizernof Jupiter were taken in 1998 by Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). It is the outermost of three massive planets orbiting the star HR 8799, 130 light-years away from Earth.
