The first satellite launch for the next-generation U.S. polar-orbiting weather constellation has been delayed another 16 months due to continued problems with one of its primary instruments, a top U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) official said April 16. rnThe launch, which as of last fall was slated for January 2013, is now not expected to occur before May 2014, Mary Kicza, NOAA's assistant administrator for satellite and information services, said during a meeting of the National Research Council's Committee on Earth Science here. The culprit, she said in a brief interview following the meeting, is the Visible/Infrared Imaging Ra- rndiometer Suite, which has taken most of the blame for the troubles that have long afflicted the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS), a joint effort of NOAA and the U.S. Air Force.
