The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has denied a protest filed by Chicago-based PlanetSpace over two contracts NASA awarded to service the international space station after the space shuttle is retired. rnPlanetSpace was protesting NASA's December selection of Hawthorne, Calif.-based Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) and Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., for separate contracts potentially worth $3.5 billion combined to haul cargo to the space station. According to source selection documents, SpaceX submitted the strongest proposal, with the lowest price, most flights and earliest date to begin service, and PlanetSpace's proposal was rated second highest. rnPlanetSpace's partners in the bid included Alliant Techsystems, Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
