The European Space Agency (ESA) on June 16 contracted with Thales Alenia Space Italy for a second development phase to prepare for a late 2012 or 2013 launch of a lifting-body re-entry technology demonstrator vehicle to be launched aboard Europe's new Vega rocket.rnThe Intermediate Experimental Vehicle (IXV) will make nearly a full orbit of the Earth before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean" The contract, valued at 37 million euros ($51.8 million), is part of a program on which ESA plans to spend a totalrnof about 130 million euros, including launch.
