As the U.S. Army inches closer to fielding its first operational Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor battery next year, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) is studying system enhancements that include an ability to utilize data from multiple sensors and a larger-diameter booster rocket, program officials said.rnBoth enhancements would increase the size of the area that the system could protect against missile attacks, the officials said.rnTHAAD was originally designed in the early 1990s to be mobile and completely autonomous, with its own radar and fire control systems. Since then, however, the MDA has developed myriad ground- and space-based sensors, and the agency will spend the next few years developing the interfaces necessary for THAAD to take advantage, Army Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly, the MDA's director, said Aug. 19 during a media briefing at the 2009 Space and Missile Defense Conference here.
