For the first time in 33 years, a space probe flew by the planet Mercury with cameras blazing Jan. 13 while eager scientists looked on from Earth. NASA's Messenger spacecraft successfully flew past its target planet at 2:04:39 p.m. EST as applause filled its mission control room here at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
