The abrupt resignation of Alan Stern as associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate is a blow to the U.S. space agency and its constituents in the scientific community. Dr. Stern, a planetary scientist, was highly responsive to the priorities of the broader community. Perhaps more importantly, he had waged a determined campaign to impose better management discipline on individual programs, something NASA desperately needs amid a budget crunch that promises to get worse before it gets better.
