When the National Air and Space Museum opened the doors of its new building to the public July 1,1976, the response was better than anyone expected. In fact it was better than anything people in the museum world had ever experienced."It was just overwhelming, unprecedented," said senior curator Tom Crouch in a June 18 interview at the museum. By July 25, 1976, the museum welcomed its 1 millionth visitor, and in less than a month it passed the 2 million mark, according to the Smithsonian's Web site.
