The near-flawless maneuvering, approach and docking of the Jules Verne spacecraft, the European Space Agency's first Automated Transfer Vehicle, to the international space station (ISS) in April allowed the countries involved in that multibillion-dollar program to breathe a little easier as they review their space transportation options after 2010 when NASA is scheduled to retire its fleet of three space shuttles. It also permitted European industry and governments to seriously consider the many future applications of ATV technology, including: fitting a future ATV with gear to permit re-entry and return capabilities for delivering station cargo such as experiments back to Earth; using an ATV as a way station for lunar or Mars ex- ploration, and using ATV as the basis for a possible future space station that Europe would build on its own.
