I was born in 1958, the same year NASA was formed, and grew up on a little farm in rural Morgan County, in north Alabama near Huntsville. My dad farmed and worked in a chemical plant on Redstone Arsenal. My mom kept house and made a garden. Life was as ordinary as country life gets, except when NASA ran a big engine test. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) began full-duration firings of the first stage of the Saturn 5, the S-IC, in August 1965. My parents' form on Brindlee Mountain was 10 miles away to the south, but when the first stage would fire, it would shake our little house. I would run out in the yard, where I could hear the rumbling thunder of the engines. The ground would be shaking, the windows ratding, and in my chest, I could feel the vibrations. I knew then, that was NASA, and that was what I wanted to do.
