Franco-Italian space-hardware manufacturer Thales Alenia Space expects to report a 17.5 percent increase in revenue for 2008, to 2 billion euros ($2.5 billion)and forecasts further increases in 2009 despite the global economic crisis, Thales Alenia Space Chief Executive Reynald Seznec said Nov. 21. Briefing reporters here a week before European Space Agency (ESA) governments are scheduled to vote on a 10.5 billion euro spending package for die next three to five years, Seznec said the company has signed a firm contract for construction of die O3B low-orbit satellite constellation to deliver broadband Internet to underserved regions around die equatorial plane. Greg Wyler, chief executive of O3B, confirmed by e-mail Nov. 21 that a firm, fixed-price contract had been signed. In addition, Seznec said Thales Alenia Space has transformed an authorization-to-proceed agreement with mobile satellite services operator Inmarsat of London into a firm contract to build an S-band mobile communications spacecraft called EuropaSat.
