Satellite-television provider DirecTV is delaying investment in new satellites because of the slowing U.S. economy as a preventive step but is not yet feeling the effects of the economic downturn on its subscriber base, according to Jonathan Rubin, the Los Angeles-based company's senior vice president for financial planning. In a Dec. 9 presentation to a UBS investor conference in New York, Rubin said the company expects its year-end figures to show an increase in subscribers. He said subscriber increases at competing telephone companies has come at the expense of cable-television providers and satellite-television provider Dish Network, not DirecTV.
