While the public is much more familiar with Wernher von Braun, historians say Robert Gilruth was just as critical to America's successful pursuit of U.S. President John F. Kennedy's goal to land a man on the Moon - and return him safely to Eardi - before the end of the 1960s. "He is the one fellow who has not received the credit he deserves with this," said Roger Laumus, chairman of the space history division of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. He was, says Launius, "a superb engineer who was ''brilliant at managing things."
