As you read this special commemorative supplement to Space News honoring the achievements of NASA over the past 50 years, I hope you will take a moment to reflect on the significance of this incredible milestone. Who would have thought that in the short time since U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act in 1958, that we would have taken steps on the Moon, sent spacecraft to explore every planet in the solar system, explored the origin and nature of the universe, established a network of Earth observing satellites, operated a space shuttle fleet, constructed an international space station and begun laying the groundwork to start regularly sending astronauts beyond Earth orbit.
