Alliant Techsystems (ATK) Launch Systems Group announced Nov. 7 that it has selected L-3 Communications to provide key components of the avionics subsystem for the first stage of NASA's Ares 1 crew launch vehicle.ATK is the prime contractor for the Ares 1 first stage, working with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center to design and test the five-segment solid-rocket booster under a contract worth $1.8 billion.
