This month, NASA will combine data from satellites, airborne remote sensing instruments and other sources to try to figure out why some winds coming out of Africa eventually form tropical storms and hurricanes in the Adantic Ocean. The agency is conducting a project known as the NASA African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses 2006, which will take place from Aug. 15 through mid-September, according to scientists who spoke at a NASA teleconference July 26. The project will cost between $4 million and $5 million, according to Ramesh Kakar, weather focus leader at NASA headquarters in Washington.
