On Sept. 21, as military space professionals from throughout the United States headed to Washington for the National Defense Industrial Association's National Security Space Policy 8 Architecture Symposium, a senior Pentagon official gave a speech that could have profound implications for their industry. The setting was a luncheon sponsored, coincidentally, by the same trade group, and the speaker was Kenneth Krieg, the new U.S. undersecretary of defense for acquisition, logistics and technology. In a nutshell, Mr. Krieg told the industry to brace itself for defense cuts made necessary by relentlessly growing demands on the Pentagon's increasingly strained resources.
