Pratt and Whitney and Boeing Co. plan to start flight-testing a scramjet rocket engine aboard an experimental missile starting around 2007. The tests, which are being funded by the U.S. Air Force, could set a speed record and also pave the way for air-breathing space launch vehicles around 2020, according to service and industry officials. In addition to helping improve satellite launchers, the technology, known as a supersonic combustion ramjet, could benefit a variety of other applications including long-range strike vehicles, said Charlie Brink, program manager for the Wave Rider effort at the Air Force Research Laboratory.
