A Sea Launch Zenit 3SL rocket placed the Telstar 14/Estrela do Sul 1 communications satellite into orbit Jan. 10, Sea Launch announced. The spacecraft, built by Space Systems/Loral of Palo Alto, Calif., carries 41 Ku-band transponders and will be located at 63 degrees west longitude. Loral Skynet do Brasil will use most of the satellite's capacity for Brazil, while the remaining transponders will cover the Americas and the North Atlantic Ocean region. Connexion by Boeing, of Seattle and Irvine, Calif., will use some of the capacity for its Internet-to-aircraft service.
