Growing up in Miami, John Karas remembers looking out his window hoping to catch a glimpse of astronaut Alan Shepard's capsule streaking across the sky on its return from the first U.S. manned spaceflight. The excitement of the Gemini and Apollo programs had a profound effect on the young Karas. "It literally set the mold of what I wanted to do with my career," he said. Karas, who has spent most of his career designing rockets and propulsion systems, now is in charge of the Lockheed Martin unit established to help NASA implement U.S. President George W.
