Japan's effort to redesign the solid-rocket booster blamed in the costly failure of its H-2A launcher late last year could merge with or be overtaken by a separate program to develop a follow-on motor that began in 2002. The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) began developing a follow-on to the Solid Rocket Booster-A (SRB-A) after data from the first two H-2A flights indicated that a new design would be desirable for heavy-lift versions of the launch-er. The follow-on booster, dubbed SRB-A2, has characteristics similar to those being considered for the redesigned SRB-A.
