Paris―After more than a decade of work and some exceptionally bad luck, Snecma is counting on 2004 to be the breakthrough year for its plasma-electric satellitethruster technology. An advanced version of Snecma's plasma-electric thruster is flying on the European Space Agency's Smart-1 technology-demonstration satellite, which has made full use of the PPS 1350 system during its ongoing journey to lunar orbit Based on designs by the Fakel organization of Krasnoyarsk, Russia, the thruster technology has gotten its first test on a non-Russian spacecraft aboard Smart 1. While no one questions the long history of Fakel thrusters on Russian satellites, these satellites were not designed to last as long in orbit as Western-built spacecraft Further, the Russians did not keep sufficient records of the Fakel thrusters' performance to assure Western operators and insurers of the reliability of the product.
