In keeping with the so-called spiral development philosophy now in vogue at the U.S. Defense Department, the first of a planned constellation of laser-equipped military communications satellites likely will not have as much capability as those that follow, according to industry and U.S. Air Force officials. As envisioned, the Air Force Transformational Satellite (T-Sat) system spacecraft will be equipped with laser-optical pay-loads for high-capacity links to ground stations, aerial platforms and other spacecraft. But the initial T-Sat satellite, slated to launch around 2012, likely will rely exclusively on radio frequency for communicating with the ground, officials said.
