A NASA spacecraft designed to collect solar wind particles has completed the gathering part of its mission and is on its way back to Earth, the agency announced. The Genesis spacecraft was launched in August 2001 and has been collecting the particles since October 2001 using arrays made of sapphire, silicon, gold and diamond. NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., deactivated and stowed the collectors in late March. The Genesis sample return capsule is scheduled to re-enter the atmosphere Sept. 8 above the U.S. Air Force's Utah Test and Training Range, where helicopter pilots will snatch it from mid-air. The particles collected by Genesis will help scientists understand the formation of the solar system and reinterpret data from past space missions.
