A German military program could serve as the springboard for Loral's attempt to break into the small geostationary satellite market through an arrangement with Rocket Space Corporation Energia of Russia. The companies are part of a consortium led by OHB-System of Bremen, Germany, that is bidding on a three-satellite military communications system planned by the German Ministry of Defense. Energia would supply its Yamal satellite platform while Loral would be responsible for the payloads. The German program is the first market opportunity to materialize for the new satellite design, said Bernard L. Schwartz, chairman of New York-based Loral Space & Communications Ltd.
