The field of companies that supply ground-based control systems for U.S. military satellites has grown in recent years, a trend some industry officials attribute to changes in the way satellite procurements are being handled. Traditionally, the U.S. Air Force has assigned its satellite prime contractor responsibility for the associated control systems, but increasingly these two program elements are being procured separately. Examples include the service's Advanced Extremely High Frequency (EHF) Wideband Gapfiller and Transformational Communications Satellite (T-Sat) systems. Not surprisingly, companies that build both satellites and ground systems view the trend somewhat differently than those who only build ground systems.
