Six Earth observation mission finalists were subjected to 90-minute oral exams April 19-20 and now have a month of tense waiting before learning which one or two proposals will be selected for funding by the European Space Agency (ESA). The six proposals are vying for selection as ESA Earth Explorer missions for launch in 2008 or 2009. Three would be so-called Core Explorers, which are relatively large and have a total mission budget―including satellite construction, launch and operations―of about 400 million euros ($480 million).
