New Business Makes Intelsat Optimistic Despite Declines

Intelsat Ltd.'s first quarter revenue, profit and earnings before interest, taxes and appreciation (EBITDA) dropped from the same period a year ago, but the company is in a good position going forward due to a pair of acquisitions, Intelsat said. Intelsat completed its purchase of several orbiting satellites from Loral Space and Communications in March and announced a deal with Lockheed Martin Corp. May 11 to acquire Comsat General for $90 million. "When in the past Intelsat could only provide capacity, once this deal is closed the Comsat General business will enable us to provide turnkey ground solutions and integration services," Conny Kullman, Intelsat's chief executive officer, said during a telephone conference with financial analysts. Kullman said the addition of Comsat General would help the company in its efforts to increase sales to government customers.
