NASA is expected to announce later this summer that it is seeking proposals from industry to develop a dedicated Landsat Earth observation satellite in 30 months for $300 million including the cost of launch, government and industry sources said. The satellite that agency officials envision is intended to take over the collection of 15-meter resolution Landsat imagery before the aging Land paired Landsat 7 fail. The proposed satellite also would serve as a technology pathfinder intended to build confidence that the collection of Landsat quality imagery could be performed by a new generation of U.S. government weather satellites already under development, sources said.
