摘要

Speaking in April during the Winck-ler Symposium at the University of Minnesota's William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute, Professor Paul Kellogg summarized the scientific accomplishments of John Winckler, the grandfather of many of today's auroral scientists. Reviewing Professor Winck-ler's extensive rocket experiment history, he pointed out that "many of the things that came out of these rocket programs were discoveries which were serendipitous." In today's space science community, serendipity is not a common theme. The beautiful Saturn ring pictures we see this month are taken with imagers that were launched seven years ago, built 10 years ago, proposed and conceived 15 years ago. The European Space Agency's Cluster program was first proposed in 1987. There is, however, one little coiner of NASA that still allows scientists to take some chances and conduct experiments in space with minimal resources and a much shorter time scale.
