As one company completed the first leg of its hot pursuit of the $10 million X Prize, a flurry of other entrepreneurial activity made clear that the dawn of commercial human spaceflight is under way. The successful Sept. 28 night of Space-ShipOne, a suborbital spacecraft built by Staled Composites, of Mojave, Calif., capped a month in which commercial zero-gravity flights were made available to the public, a British entrepreneur announced the beginning of suborbital tourist flights by 2007 and another prize was announced, this time a $50 million award for the first flight of a vehicle capable of carrying as many as seven passengers into Earth orbit.
