XM Satellite Radio will pay Major League Baseball $650 million for the rights to broadcast games beginning in 2005, the company announced Oct. 20. Under the 11-year deal, XM will broadcast every regular season and playoff game and also will create a Major League Baseball channel featuring original content, re-broadcasts of past games and Spanish-language broadcasts. "This is the crown jewel — the deal that we've been waiting for," Hugh Panero, XM's chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Major League Baseball is America's national pastime and a natural fit with XM, the national leader in satellite radio."
