China's confidence to act as a modern nation will be put to the test with their next manned space launch, expected in Autumn 2005. Officials know what they have to do, but whether or HOI. they can do it remains doubtful, because of the transparency obligations involved. Their first manned mission, Shenzhou 5, launched Oct. 15, 2003, made China only the third country in the world, with the United States and Russia, capable of manned spaceflight. With Sheiizhou 6 China will likely begin to extend its technical competencies. But beyond the technical aspects of the launch, equally important to watch will be how much, and in what manner, information about Shenzhou 6 is provided domestically and internationally. That will indicate the Chinese leadership's confidence in themselves, in the Chinese people's ability to handle uncensored news and in China's readiness to be a full member of the family of space-faring nations — inferring a suitable and desirable partner for space cooperation.
