摘要

An apparent defect in a popular line of space-qualified, user-programmable computer chips has caused disruptions across a broad range of U.S. civil and military programs, according to government and industry officials. A team of technical experts from both government and industry is scrambling to solve the mys-lerious problem, which has prompted at least one U.S. agency, NASA, to replace the suspect components on several spacecraft. The device in question is a type of field programmable gate array (FPGA) produced by Actel Corp. of Mountain View, Calif. Introduced only in the last few years, FPGAs are shipped by the thousands — essentially as blank slates — to customers who then program them to manage specific functions. The devices are now widely used aboard satellites and rockets.
