India made a splash this past September by becoming the first Asian nation to independently place a spacecraft in orbit around Mars, but down-to-Earth applications remain the No. 1 priority of its civil space program. So says Alur Seelin Kiran Kumar, who on Jan. 14 became the newest chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation. The fact that India's political leaders selected someone with Kumar's background for the top civil space job strongly backs that assertion: Having begun his ISRO career in 1975, Kumar has had a hand in developing nearly every payload flown on Indian remote sensing satellites since 1979.
