Europe's billion-dollar Alphasat I-XL telecommunications satellite, financed by the French and European space agencies to maintain Europe's commercial competitiveness against the likes of Boeing, Space Systems/Loral and Lockheed Martin, is being prepared for a first launch that may be the program's last. Alphasat I-XL has been purchased by mobile satellite services operator Inmarsat, which will use the satellite to add to its core L-band business.
