The U.S. Air Force awarded Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Sunnyvale, Calif., a $101 million contract modification to prepare two refurbished weather satellite for launch, according to a July 23 announcement. The cost-plus-award-fee contract includes work associated with new launch dates for the last two satellites in the Air Force's Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). The Air Force has been refurbishing two 1990s-vintage satellites, DMSP F19 and DMSP F20, and requested $89 million in 2013 for the effort. Flight 19 is scheduled to launch aboard an Atlas 5 rocket in fiscal year 2014. The DMSP Flight 20 is expected to launch a year later, Gen. William Shelton, commander of Air Force Space Command, said July 16.
