The new French government is determined to maintain the viability of the Ariane rocket system by investing in an upgrade or a successor to the rocket this year despite Europe's sovereign debt crisis, French Research Minister Genevieve Fioraso said. In a written statement delivered to the Toulouse Space Show held here June 25-28, Fioraso said maintaining Europe's independent access to space is an "absolute necessity."
