The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) awarded Raytheon Missile Systems of Tucson, Ariz., a $230 million contract modification for 19 additional Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) ship-based interceptors, the Pentagon announced Aug. 30. The sole-source, cost-plus-incentive-fee contract modification calls for 14 SM-3 Block 1A interceptors and five of the new Block IB variants and increases the value of Raytheon's contract to $1.9 billion, the Pentagon said. The SM-3 Block 1A variant is designed to counter short- and medium-range missiles. It is deployed on U.S. Navy ships as part of the MDA's Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system. The Block IB has a longer range than the Block 1A interceptors and a different divert and attitude control system.
