Satellite fleet operator SES expects to profit from EchoStar's acquisition of satellite broadband provider Hughes Communications in markets outside North America but would raise antitrust issues if competitors Intelsat and Tele-sat agreed to merge, SES officials said March 14. Englewood, Colo.-based EchoStar, which already leases SES satellites in North America, has said the Hughes addition will help it expand outside North America. EchoStar's $2 billion purchase of German town, Md.-based Hughes is expected to receive regulatory approval in the coming months.
