A wall of a waste-retaining pond gave way Oct. 4 at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar alumina (aluminum oxide) plant in western Hungary. The failure released a torrent of toxic red sludge down a local stream inundating several nearby towns, including Kolontar and De-vecser (noted on image at right), where the sludge was 2 meters deep in places. Four people reportedly were killed immediately and several more were missing. Dozens of residents were hospitalized for chemical burns.
