This book is one in a series of Springer-Praxis books on space exploration. It is orientated towards those broadly interested in space rather than being an academic text. With this broad appeal it is a highly successful blend of material about Earth observation satellites, navigation satellites and spying from space. The orientation to the public interested in space can be seen in the common use of comparisons, in particular that of Earth observation instruments in space with digital cameras and cameras in mobile phones that readers might well own, and Norris adopts a journalistic style from time to time, for example when quoting from industry or government leaders in the space sector.
