1. If space exploration is to be sustainable, it must be carried out cooperatively; one way of promoting it as a truly global human endeavour would be to find a symbol to stand for the whole world and mitigate the race to place national flags on the Moon or elsewhere. Sanjoy Som makes the case for using the 'blue marble' - the first complete picture of Earth taken from space - as such a symbol. Further ways of improving collaboration in space are discussed by a brace of US space consultants in their examination of the pros - shared costs, expertise and risk - and cons - increased overall cost, tech transfer issues, political and cultural constraints - of multi-partner missions. They suggest four different cooperative levels to cover different types of projects and recommend addressing potential problems like releasability early on.
