An investigation into our apparent failure to find any intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe, despite decades of increasingly sophisticated searching. This well illustrated and accessibly written book examines past and present 'close encounters', the rise of the SETI movement and what other possibilities it might explore, as well as if, how, and through whom we should respond if a signal were to be received. It investigates the foundations of carbon-based life on Earth (including the varied extreme forms thereof in unfeasibly harsh environments) to question whether we will ever find it elsewhere, and asks what the search for extra-terrestrials tells us about ourselves.
