摘要

Early extrasolar probes, such as NASA's Heliopause Sail, will be mass-limited and therefore may not carry imaging equipment. It is shown that trajectory deflections during close flybys of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) by these probes can yield information regarding KBO mass. When combined with terrestrial KBO size estimates, KBO density can be readily calculated. Risks include collisions with binary KBO satellites and can be reduced by separating the radio-equipped sail from payload before KBO encounter and performing the KBO flyby with the sail alone.
