摘要

This paper reports on a new materials processing facility for the synthesis of single crystals in space under microgravity. The facility was developed for utilization onboard the Chinese "ShenZhou" series spacecrafts, with the capability of programmable specimen exchange for multiple tasks. It consists of three main parts, a furnace, a specimen management system and a controller. The furnace is designed for single crystal synthesis by the Bridgman method, with a maximum temperature of 1000℃ and a maximum temperature gradient of 70℃/cm. The sample management system consists of a sample magazine, a sample exchange assembly and a sample translation assembly. The controller is a programmable microprocessor system of duel functions for system operational control and for data acquisition. The facility is able to perform multiple tasks during one launch mission, for example processing different materials such as semiconductors, oxide crystals, metals and alloys. The size of the sample cartridge that can be processed is φ22 x 260 mm in cylindrical shape. The average power consumption of the furnace is less than 75 watts. The functionality of the facility has been validated in one mission with 6 crystal growth experiments.
